Charles Alexander Biography

Charles Alexander is one of the most popular and richest American Football Player who was born on July 28, 1957 in Galveston, Texas, United States. Alexander’s workload slowed down during his final season of 1978 when the Tigers offense got more balanced thanks to the potential LSU Athletic Hall of Inductee David Woodley at quarterback. Alexander as well as Woodley helped the team achieve an 8-3 mark. In the final stretch of the season Alexander was attracting comparisons to NFL runners Earl Campbell due to his “unique, slashing running style.” Alexander was the final player as an Tiger during the 1978 Liberty Bowl, in which Alexander racked up an impressive 133 yards and 24 the carries during a 20-15 loss to Missouri.

He played a prominent role during the Bengals’ run in the 1981 playoffs. In their divisional round win against the Buffalo Bills, Alexander rushed for 72 yards and scored two touchdowns. He is one of four Bengals players to score multiple touchdowns from scrimmage in a single postseason game, as well as the first to do so. He rushed for 22 yards and caught three passes for 25 yards in the Bengals’ win over San Diego in the infamous “Freezer Bowl.” “Everything on the sidelines froze: the players, the water, the Gatorade, everything,” said Alexander about the game conditions. In Super Bowl XVI, he carried five times for 17 yards while catching two passes for three yards in the Bengals’ loss to the 49ers.

After retiring from the NFL, Alexander went into the oil and gas business. He also briefly served as assistant director of LSU’s Tiger Athletic Foundation. In 1989, Alexander was inducted into the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2011, he founded Charlie 4 Strong Seasoning, Inc., which markets C’mon Man Cajun seasoning and fish fry. In 2012, he became the eighth former LSU football player inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Alexander was the Tigers the team’s running back of choice during his junior year in 1977. When he played against Oregon the team, he recorded four scores and also set a record for the school by running 237 yards. In recognition of his efforts, he was awarded the United Press International Back of the Week. His 1,686 rushing yards during that season helped lead LSU up to an impressive 8-3 record in the regular season and a spot in the Sun Bowl. In the contest, Alexander set two Sun Bowl record rushing records. He carried 31 times and an impressive 197 yards. He also received Offensive Player of the Game distinctions. Alexander’s effort was not enough, and Alexander was named to the 75th anniversary All-Sun Bowl Team, LSU was defeated by Stanford 24-14.

His achievements in the LSU uniform led the fans to call him “Alexander the Great.” In each of his last two seasons playing for LSU’s Tigers, Alexander was selected as a consensus All-American and also earned All-SEC distinctions. In 1977, he was also Alexander chosen as one of the SEC Most Valuable Player by the Nashville Banner. Through his college years, Alexander broke 9 SEC records, set another record and also set the 27 LSU records. Alexander finished the course of his LSU season with 4,035 yards of rushing, more than 1,500 greater than Tigers previously-recorded leading rushing yards. His total of 1,686 rushing yards as well as 153.3 miles per game during 1977’s season were LSU single-season records through the 2015 season, where both were broken by the Leonard Fournette.

Alexander was selected 12th overall in the first round of the 1979 draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. He spent the majority of his professional career backing up Pro Bowl running back Pete Johnson, while also splitting carries with former Heisman winner Archie Griffin. His most productive season came in 1980, during which he played in all 16 regular season games and carried the ball 169 times for 702 yards.
